In the early Spring of 2020, as a virus swept the globe, people moved indoors and DeSantis closed the beaches, a tiny seabird began its long migration north. Finally reaching the shores of Deerfield Beach, they found a peaceful, empty, quiet stretch of sand (guarded by police none the less) and set up camp! This once in a lifetime event produced the most successful least tern nesting colony ever in Deerfield Beach and one of the most successful in the state that year.
This is the story of the stewards, the residents, the commissioner, the city and the brave little birds who made this possible.
About the Speaker
Ann Wiley moved to Florida in the mid 80’s developing an interest in its wildlife and ecosystems. She’s volunteered in sea turtle conservation for 30 years, rescuing & releasing green, leatherback and loggerhead hatchings disoriented by coastal lighting and with nesting seabirds and shorebirds, as an FWC volunteer, for the past twelve. For over 20 years Ann’s been a lead ecological tour guide for the Caribbean based Dragonfly Expeditions leading tours through south Florida and the Greater Everglades System. She’s a regular lecturer for Road Scholar Travel Company and different conservation organizations and teaches urban backyard landscaping to support songbirds and other native wildlife.
